Legend has it that, during the reign of Trisong Detsan, many demons and ghosts emerged in the southern areas of Tibet. Trisong Detsan invited Padmasambhava from India to keep all the evil spirits under control in Samye Monastery, most of whom submitted meekly and were willing to become the protectors of the Buddhist doctrine. The few who escaped from the dharma power left some blood on the ground, where some tobacco flowers bloomed, and people later made snuff
