The Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway is a very conserved signaling pathway from Drosophila to humans and plays an important role in the development of multiple tissues and organs during the embryonic stage of vertebrates and invertebrates. Abnormalities in the Hh signaling pathway lead to the development of diseases (birth defects and cancer). Recent studies have found that Hh signaling pathway plays an important role in fat growth and development, activation of Hh signaling pathway can specifically inhibit the differentiation of white adipose tissue cells, but has no effect on brown adipose tissue cell differentiation. This review summarizes the role of Hh signaling pathway in adipocyte differentiation and its molecular mechanisms, and prospects for future research and applications are also presented.
