In 1986, India found the first case of HIV infection. It is estimated that the number of people currently infected has reached 2.5 million and will exceed 5 million by the end of this century. The following are the prevalence of various groups: Prostitutes: A survey of 60,000 prostitutes in Mumbai found that HIV seropositive rates continued to rise: 20% (1990), 35% (1991), 40% (1992), 45% (1993). If growth does not change, by 2000, 80% of prostitutes in Mumbai will be HIV-positive. The HIV prevalence rate of prostitutes in the neighboring Pune region rose from 6% (1989) to 42% (1994).
