Through the research on Shanghai L jewelry store and P clothing store, this article finds that the low social and economic status, educational level and double commercialization of labor force and physical representation make the male salesman in the service industry construct a materialized masculinity. This masculinity and the mainstream recognized “high income ” “high education ” “earn money ” dominating the masculine gender gap, resulting in these male salesman gender temperament anxiety. When they find themselves unable to meet the social masculine qualities they tend to ease their masculine anxieties by demarcating sex workers - demeaning their sales staff and stigmatize the female manager. Gender divisions of male sales assistants, while alleviating their own anxiety, are not conducive to changing the unequal gender order and reproduce gender segregation and gender inequalities within the workplace.
