More than 10 new sensory projection neurons have been identified in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord since the 1980s. All of these neurons are characterized by their branched axons or collaterals. The branch axons of these neurons project to more than two different nuclei, respectively, including the somatosensory and visceral sensory nuclei. Some of these neurons receive the afferent input of the soma and the viscera from the central target nucleus to which they are projected, while the afferent input of the soma and the viscera is received from the periphery by the primed primary afferent. Some peripheral sensory input may first be converged and processed on the spinal ganglion neurons. These findings appear to be a challenge to the traditional concept of single-shot and single-dominated sensory neurons and are involved in somatic-related and related clinical disorders.
