吴昌硕早年篆刻以“苍茫斑驳”的钝刀法创作,曾有过因过分为之而导致点画纤弱的弊病,但他广益多师、及时调整,在其篆刻艺术成熟时期呈现出苍茫朴厚的风格;其篆书早年呈现出清丽流美的气息,但并未沿着所谓的“书卷气”风格发展下去。在成熟时期,其篆刻刀法对其篆书的墨法影响至大,从而使得其书法与篆刻乃至绘画都呈现出“老苍”的气息,这既有上述艺术门类相互影响的原因,也与其生活经历以及心性、身份密切关联。
