舞剧《早春二月》与其说改编自柔石的中篇小说,不如说更贴近谢铁骊先行改编的电影。正是依据那一中篇小说改编的电影,根据中国电影界先驱者夏衍的建议,在中篇小说《二月》的书名上加上了“早春”二字。夏衍的建议,意在使“二月”的隐喻明朗化;但我所关心的是,柔石为何借一个时间概念来“隐喻”?他为何不用诸如古镇、老船这类地理的、物事的意象?唯一可以解释的是,那一代青年最为敏感的是时代的征候——虽然是“乍暖还寒”时节,但已然“风起于青萍之末……”敏感于时代征候的青年形象叫萧涧秋。
