搽旦脚色在元杂剧中为不司唱的次要脚色,主要扮演性格恶毒、乖戾、淫荡、滑稽的女性。搽旦脚色的出现是元杂剧旦类脚色不断丰富、分工不断细化的结果,纷纭繁复的市井生活是其产生的社会根源。搽旦脚色在元杂剧中有重要的结构性功能与舞台排场功能,其司职与净等其他脚色有重叠之处,尚处于由人物类型向脚色过渡的状态。搽旦脚色在实际演出时的复杂情形,说明元杂剧在脚色称谓与扮演方面尚未形成定制。
