Decreased bone mineral density can cause spontaneous fractures in the elderly, especially in older women. In 1983, 1.3 million people in the United States fractured because of osteoporosis. By about 2030, the doubling of osteoporosis among the elderly over the age of 65 will increasingly become a common medical, social and economic issue. Cross-sectional investigation with a dual-beam absorptometer showed that from the age of 20 to 40 years, vertebral bone mass gradually decreased with age, with 42% fewer women and 10% fewer men. Now that the reduction of estrogen is the cause of spontaneous osteoporosis, other factors are dietary calcium intake and absorption, exercise and other hormones. The calcium-absorbing gut absorbs calcium in active form, passive diffusion and osmosis. 1,25 (OH) _2D, a metabolite of vitamin D, plays an important role in the regulation of intestinal Ca and P active transport. dimension
