先秦时期,由于趋利避害的心理使然,人们在举事时,常常择日而行,这样便形成了所谓的“吉日”和“疾日”。吉日主要有丁亥日和庚寅日,人们以此为吉善,举行社会活动。疾日主要有子卯日和端午日,人们对此有诸多禁忌。与此相关,先秦时期还有“刚日”和“卯日”,从文献和出土文物来看,刚日主外事,柔日主内事。
