In the concept of traditional consumption in ancient Chinese society, “advocating thrift and suppressing luxury” is undoubtedly the norm universally recognized by all sectors of society. The formation of this traditional concept of consumption not only reflects the virtues of frugality advocated by Chinese ancestors, but also helps to suppress the luxury consumption desire of the ruling class to a certain extent, slow down the consumption of social wealth and reduce the economic burden on the working people. The motto of governing the country by the rule of thrift, such as “saving the country with plenty of power” and “keeping a frugal household,” still has its positive effect to this day. However, the core idea of “advocating frugality and restraining extravagance” is not simply a matter of living a thrifty life, but one of the important tenets of maintaining the natural economy of the feudal society . And for the different social strata, the so-called “frugality” and “luxury” also have different meanings. To trace the historical process of the formation of this traditional concept of consumption, to explore the interrelationship between “frugal” and “depressing luxury” and to analyze its role in history is not without any help to deeply study the traditional concept of consumption in ancient China.
