In focusing on the early years of his life, the experience of the imperial examination as a potentially important clue illuminates the latter’s meaning in reference to his literary activities. Juvenile Zhou Zuoren can be described as a wide range of hobbies: He loves the beauty of the country, folk diet, hobby flowers and grass, but also fascinated by the study play, these can be clearly seen in his diary.
