At present, education and training have been seen as key to the success of franchising. Although there are many studies in this area, they are mostly summary advice (such as training your staff, then they will be the ones you expect) or some very restrictive and context-specific Theory (such as: agency theory: supervision and management fees and the franchisor’s supervision and management frequency). These are important but none of them effectively explain how to educate and train staff in franchising. In this paper, we will explore why some people do not know, and more importantly, why these people do not know they do not understand. But at the same time, why do other people know. Most importantly, why do they know they do not understand? We will review the importance of education and training, as well as important factors for the proper training of franchisors, licensees and employees.
