The authors studied anti-tumor activity in the serum of 42 vitiligo patients, 42 patients of other age-matched non-immune diseases (psoriasis, vulgaris, acne vulgaris, etc.) (as controls) and 17 malignant melanoma patients. The antibodies and their own antibodies were measured. METHODS: Melanoma antigens (antigens 1, 2, 3) were first extracted from the lesions of two patients with primary melanoma and one patient with malignant freckles. Antigens (also known as antigens 4, 5) were also prepared from the lesions of a single freckle-like fistula and a benign barley lesion. Lesion specimens (diagnosed by tissue) were removed from fat and fibrous tissue, minced, homogenized, and pelleted by centrifugation. The supernatant was assayed for protein concentration using a spectrophotometer; antigen 1 was 14.5; antigen 2 was 9.8; antigen 3 was 1.4; antigen 4 was 11.0; antigen 5 was 0.8 micron
