According to a recent report by Nature Weekly, the Indian government is under increasing pressure from its own scientists to require stricter legal provisions to control the export of human DNA and blood samples. Because there are more and more signs that foreign research groups want to use India as a “hunting ground” for large numbers of disease genes and their mutants. The main pressure comes from some researchers in India who fear that some of their valuable genetic information is “illegitimate” taken by foreigners under the guise of human genetic research. Although since 1992, the export of biological organizations in India have been required to obtain a special exit clearance issued by the Indian Medical Research Council. But the commission did not have sufficient authority to enforce the law, so its officials said they could not actually stop the blood sample from leaving India without letting them know.
