萨摩亚独立国位于太平洋南部,萨摩亚群岛西部,由萨瓦伊和乌波卢2个主岛及7个小岛组成。陆地面积2934平方千米,水域面积12万平方千米。人口17.7万。首都阿皮亚,为全国仅有的城市。1768年,法国航海家布干维尔在环球航行途中靠近该岛屿,见海岸上有很多独木舟,变为该岛取名航海者群岛。现名系由Sa-ia-moa一词转讹而来,意即“崇为神物的恐鸟”。另一说是,毛利人从新西兰来到这里,看到大批恐鸟,十分惊讶,便呼为“萨摩亚”。
