In his novels, Lu Xun succeeded in realizing some kind of fission of the author himself. He not only acted as a narrator but also as a character, showing a secular and mediocre self and an ideal and vulgar self. The narrative form of “hair story” is a true manifestation of the spiritual self-splitting of intellectuals during the May 4th Movement. These two real shades sway back and forth in the text, eventually shifting to the ideal, ultra-vulgar self, completing the aesthetic conversion of the novel. The purity and healthy atmosphere of the early novels in modern Chinese literature have benefited from the promotion of ultra-vulgar ideals and thus laid the cultural code for the tradition of modern Chinese literature.
