妥协是一种艺术,妥协可能更有利于历史的进步与发展.1688年,英国新贵族和资产阶级各阶层出于各自利益,都反对詹姆士二世的疯狂复辟政策,他们联合起来发动不流血的宫廷政变,推翻复辟王朝,资产阶级和封建主义达成妥协,并掌握了政权,这被西方史学家称为"光荣革命".通过革命,英国建立起一种新的政治制度,即代表英国新贵族和资产阶级利益的君主立宪制,开创了以"议会为国家权力中心"的资本主义代议民主政治,但也保留了君主制和贵族制的遗风.
