p16 is a newly discovered tumor suppressor gene that plays a regulatory role in the cell cycle during the transition from G1 phase to S phase and competes with cyclinD1 for binding to cyclin dependent protein kinase (CDK) 4 / CDK6 and inhibiting its kinase Activity, prevent cells from entering the S phase from the G1 phase, thereby inhibiting cell proliferation. Studies have shown that it is associated with the occurrence of a variety of tumors, widely present in many tumors in the form of deletion, mutation or methylation, and is involved in the occurrence and development of tumors. The research progress of p16 in oral cancer is reviewed.
