The environmentally responsible ENRES water resource planning model was applied to all of England and Wales and compared to the 1994 national water resource plan. Before running this model, let EPB staff from across the UK fill out a questionnaire for each project and conduct an environmental assessment of all relevant sections. In order to infer the best solution for a region, the model ran multiple times. With environment-friendly planning, an additional investment of about £ 28 million (at 1991 prices) is required. This part of the additional costs can be seen as quantifying the environmental impact of the proposed scenario. The results of the example show that the model can be used to make a more environmentally friendly solution by considering the cost of alternative environment, and at the same time incorporate environmental protection into the national water resources planning.
