American writer Henry James mainly created two kinds of masqueraded characters in her “international theme” novel: pure and innocent, innocent and romantic “American Girl of the International” and sophisticated and sophisticated Europe people. Through the analysis of some “international theme” novels by various stages of the writer, the author points out that these two types of characters shaped by writers are not so much a historical fact as a cultural metaphor. Too much emphasis on American moral sense behind the writer just hides the cultural inferiority long-term accumulated by American literati, and tries to achieve cultural transcendence by raising moral awareness. The attempt to use the marriage mode to achieve the cultural integration between Europe and the United States is, in a certain sense, a psychological compensation for the writer’s own lack of experience.
