Dear Editor,
This summer I worked as a volunteer for the Shanghai Expo. Now the Expo has lowered its curtain successfully, but one of my experiences during the Expo has been disturbing me a lot.
It was a sunny Saturday noon and many visitors are having lunch on the grassland. I saw a foreign couple and a Chinese couple who had just finished their lunch. Without any hesitation, the Chinese couple threw their leftover food and the plastic bags on the grass.
Astonished and shocked, the foreign couple said, “It’s no good to damage the environment by littering carelessly.”
The words of the foreign couple strike my mind so much. Shouldn’t we strengthen our awareness of environmental protection? The unacceptable phenomenon of spitting, littering and picking flowers in public places should be banned completely. A good environment calls for action and participation by everyone. We must make every effort to cherish our environment.
Yours ever,
Li Hua

Dear Mayor,
I have found that the pollution in our city is more and more serious. It is very important to deal with the rubbish in cities. Rubbish must be treated properly. Otherwise it may cause a lot of trouble. Here are my suggestions.
First, we should take measures to solve the problem. For example, some rubbish can be sorted and sent to different factories. Rubbish like newspapers and glass will be treated and reused. Some harmful rubbish should be sent to a certain place and buried. Waste water will also be treated before it is poured into rivers.
Second, to protect the environment, it is necessary to pass laws to prevent people from throwing rubbish everywhere. Everyone has the duty to fight against pollution. I hope my advice will be helpful to you.
Your sincerely,
Li Ming

环境问题日益严重。请你根据漫画内容和下面要求给China Daily写一封信反映这一情况,并提出保护环境的建议。

Dear editor,
Environmental problems are becoming more and more serious all over the world.
With the development of industry and agriculture, cars make great noises and give off poisonous gas. Because of population expansion and overdevelopment, resources has become less and less. Trees on the hills have been cut down, and waste water is being poured continuously into rivers. The whole ecological balance of the earth is changing. Massive destruction of environment has brought about negative effects and even poses a great threat to man’s existence.
We must face the situation that exists and take actions to solve our environmental problems. We hope that all these measures will be effective and bring back a healthful environment.
Yours truly,
Li Hua

With the global warming getting increasingly worse, more people are aware of this serious problem and choose to live a low-carbon life for the purpose of reducing greenhouse gases. As students, we also have the responsibility to change our lifestyle to fit in with the world better. The following are some small things that may lead to big improvement of the environment.
To begin with, wash your clothes by hand as much as possible instead of using washing machines. Secondly, don’t take elevators unless it is necessary. Using stairs does benefit to both your health and the environment. Thirdly, remember to bring your own shopping bags when you go to supermarket. Lastly, go to school on foot or by bicycle. Buses produce carbon too.
Let’s take action right now and be low-carbon people.
训练二
现在全社会都在倡导低碳生活,呵护地球家园。而每年的元宵节,你所在的城市都要举行一场30分钟的焰火晚会。据报道:一场这样的焰火晚会耗资大约150万元。市民为此议论纷纷。请你以“Is it Wise to Celebrate the Lantern Festival with Fireworks?”为题写一篇英语短文,谈谈你对此的看法。

Is it Wise to Celebrate the Lantern Festival with Fireworks?
In China, it’s a custom to celebrate the Lantern Festival by setting off fireworks. In my city, there is an annual firework show sponsored by the government. It is true that setting off fireworks does offer relaxation and excitement to the citizens. However, I don’t think it is wise to celebrate the Lantern Festival in this way. My reasons are as follows.
Firstly, it is really a waste of money. The fireworks last only 30 minutes, but it costs about 1.5 million yuan, which can be used for the city construction. Secondly, while fireworks are wonderful to look at, they cause air pollution. Besides, some unexpected fires might break out, causing heavy damage and loss.
In conclusion, celebrating the Lantern Festival with fireworks isn’t necessary.
