《失子惊疯》是全本《乾坤福寿镜》中的一折。是尚小云先生的代表剧目。剧中的主人公是个悲剧人物,她先遭暗算,被迫怀孕出逃。又在逃亡路上被强盗掳去,幸被山婆放走,大难过后,才发现新产婴儿又在这场劫难中丢失,急惊成疯。17年后,母子才得团聚。17年的遭遇,大起大落,人物的感情变化是十分剧烈的。为了表现胡氏大起大落的感情变化,尚小云设计了许多强烈的舞蹈动作。由于尚小云有坚实的武功功底,因而他以文戏武唱的风格塑造了胡氏这一横遭困苦颠连的古代妇女形象,使这出戏的表演至今仍具独特的艺术审美价值。尚小云在《失子惊疯》一剧中,水袖功的表演十分吃重,它是揭示胡氏失去儿子后内心剧烈震动以至急惊成疯的重要表现手段。
