Lomax-Smith and Azzopardi describe a special type of cell in parotid pleomorphic adenomas. This cell is usually ovoid, with a nuclear orientation, and the cytoplasm is obviously homogenous and hyaline like glass. It calls these cells “transparent cells” or “plasma-like cells,” and it is considered to be mucin-cartilage. Like tissue, it is almost a feature of pleomorphic adenomas. Therefore, it is valuable in the diagnosis and classification of salivary gland tumors. To study the characteristics and frequencies of clear cells in parotid pleomorphic adenomas, 52 cases of small parotid glands and 72 cases of pleomorphic adenoma of the salivary gland were observed by light microscopy. One case of polymorphic glands of small parotid glands was observed. Tumor specimens (all composed of clear cells) were deparaffinized with paraffin blocks and 4 fresh specimens with large salivary gland polymorphic adenomas were observed by electron microscopy.
