中国传统戏曲自形成至19世纪末,其演出与外国戏剧演出相比,一直是在较为原始、较为简陋的舞台条件下进行的.“戏曲艺人有舞台可以演戏,没有舞台同样可以演戏.”19世纪末,随着西方文明的输人,戏曲舞台在演出条件、技术手段上有了不同程度的改进与丰富.西方舞台美术在这一时期对中国戏曲的一个最直接、最根本性的影响,就是带来了戏曲演出场地的突破性变化,较之传统舞台或剧场在格局、形制、观演关系以及物质条件方面都出现了极为重要的改观.
