Mr. Yan Zixiang, the President of the 4th and 5th Council of the Architectural Society of China, passed away on January 7, 2000. Yuan Jingshen, an old friend and colleague of Yan Zixiang, former deputy chief of the State Construction Engineering Administration, cherishes deeply the memory of his contact with Yan during the past half century and introduces Yans excellent contributions and fine qualities. The author stresses that, in October l954, the two of them made their first acquaintance. At that time, Yan served as the Vice Director of Beijing Institute of Industrial Architecture Design under the Ministry of Construction Engineering. I soon realized that he was a man with political standard as well as a man of foresight and sagacity. After 1955 he was transferred to the Design Bureau as bureau chief. Yet he still showed a great concern for the work of the design institute. During the time of his in charge of the work of the Beijing Institute of Industrial Architecture Design, he paid much attention to uniting the broad technicial presonel and cared specially for the senior technicial experts. After May 1979, he began to hold concurrent post as the President of the Council of the Architectural Society of China in charge of the work of the Society. He successfully presided over the National Designing Work Conference, the National Symposium on Scenic Spot Planning and Architecture as well as other conferences. Thus, playing an important role in pushing forward the organizational work of city planning in China, upgrading the level of architectural design and promoting the development of science and technology. After his retirement in the 1980s, he was still ardently loyal to the architectural cause. Without seeking fame and wealth, he led a simple living and was a senior and leader always being respected by the Chinese construction and architectural circles. His immortal deeds, outstanding achievements, glorious image, heartfelt emotion and profound friendship will linger in our mind forever
