In recent years, the research on second language acquisition and second language learning motivation has attracted a great deal of attention from researchers and teachers. However, there are still many problems to be studied in this respect, especially for Pakistan. Among the different influencing factors that motivate second language acquisition, this study focuses on the motivation of different universities (public and private) and different disciplines (liberal arts and sciences). This study collected 547 first-year university students’ questionnaires on the impact of different contextual factors on the motivation of second language learning in English. The results show that private university students have stronger motivation and better grades than public university students. Public university students have a strong instrumental motivation and private university students tend to be second language idealistic. There was no significant difference in motivation for second language learning among students in disciplines, but there was significant difference in achievement between the two groups. The motivation of liberal arts students depends on their attitude towards English, while the motivation of science students in English major is significant. This article also discusses the reasons for these differences in motivation and their implications for English teachers and learners.
