高州油茶(Comellia gauchowensis Chang),树形高大,果大,单位面积产量高,寿命长,果实出籽率和含油率也较高,是山茶属中一个较优良的物种。据广东省林科所试验和观察证明:高州油茶在广州地区一年可抽梢2—4次,比广宁油茶速生,从幼苗开始就比普通油茶速生,且长得粗壮;栽培得好,还可早结实,比广宁油茶早。油茶是异花授粉为主的树种,自然授粉座果率只有5％—7％,所以自然界中各种类型共生,良莠不齐,大面积平均产量低而不稳。
