The International Symposium on In Vitro Effects of Mine Dust was held at the Institute of Pneumoconiosis in Wells, UK, from September 4 to 7, 1979. 75 delegates from 12 countries participated. The meeting reviewed different techniques for studying the in vitro effects of dust biology and proposed a large variety of dust test materials, but mainly asbestos dust. It has been reported that hemolysis is used to classify mineral dust. However, it is generally accepted at the conference that hemolysis can not predict the pathogenicity of dust in vivo, but it is an effective method to study the effect of mineral dust and biofilm.
