自20世纪70年代起,西方女权主义运动日益兴盛。近代生态环境的逐日恶化,生态主义者们发现女性与自然之间存在着不可分割的内在联系,因此抓住女权主义运动契机,将生态主义与女权主义有机结合起来,从而衍生出一种新的派系——生态女性主义。本文试图从生态女性主义所关注的女性与自然、女性与男性之间的关系这一角度,来解析在作者乔治·艾略特生活的维多利亚时期存在的性别歧视、种族歧视、教育歧视、婚姻角色不公平等一系列的社会问题。此外,尝试把工业革命后自然环境的恶化与对人类反抗和女主人公麦琪的抗争结合起来,最终努力找出一条人与自然共存、男性与女性平等友爱的和谐之路。
