  Like a Gentleman

Dick was seven years old, and his sister, Catherine, was five. One day their mother took them to their aunt’s house to play while she herself went to a big city to buy some new clothes.
The children played for an hour, and then at half past four their aunt took Dick into the kitchen. She gave him a nice cake and a knife and said to him, “Now here’s a knife, Dick. Cut this cake in half and give one of the pieces to your sister, but remember to do it like a gentleman.”
“Like a gentleman?” Dick asked. “How does a gentleman do it?”
“He always gives the bigger piece to the other person,” answered his aunt at once.
“Oh,” said Dick. He thought about this for a few seconds. Then he took the cake to his sister and said to her, “Cut this cake in half, Catherine.”

  The Diet

A woman was lamenting to her diet club that she had gained weight. She had made her family’s favorite cake over the weekend, she reported, and they’d eaten half of it at dinner.
The next day, she said, she kept staring at the other half, and then she cut a thin slice for herself. One slice led to another, and soon the whole cake was gone.
The woman went on to talk about how upset she was with her lack of willpower. As she sat in front of the now-empty cake plate, she was also concerned about how disappointed her husband would be when he found out what she had done.
Everyone commiserated with her. Then, someone asked what her husband said when he got home.
She smiled. “Oh, I solved that problem. He never found because I made another cake and ate half!”

  It Isn’t Lost

Jim worked as a cabin-boy on a small steamer. One morning he broke a coffee-pot and threw it into the sea. When he brought in the breakfast for the captain, he said,“May I ask you a question, sir?”
“Of course, you may,” said the captain, “What is it?”
“Is a thing lost if you know where it is?” said Jim.
“Of course it isn’t,” said the captain.
“Then your coffee-pot isn’t lost, sir, because I know where it is,” said Jim with a smile.
“Where is it?” asked the captain.
“At the bottom of the sea,” said Jim.
