陕西省林科所从1978年开始,采用人工有性杂交和实生选种方法,从12个杂交组合和8株泡桐优树的天然杂交后代中选育出陕桐一号和陕桐二号两个优良无性系。通过造林对比和区域栽培试验表明:这两个优良无性系生长快、干形好,材积生长量比对照种兰考泡桐分别大61.6%和42.9%;适应范围广,在关中平原和渭北旱塬地区,都具有速生特性;抗性较强,丛枝病的自然发病率比对照低20—40%左右,受大袋蛾危害亦较轻,陕桐二号还有一定的抗盐性。现已用陕桐一号和陕桐二号营造农桐间作示范林1万余亩,栽植5万多株,均生长良好。该项成果已于10月中旬由陕西省林业厅主持通过鉴定,认为具有国内同类研究的先进水平。
