本文以拉伯晚年长篇小说《鸟鸣谷档案》为文本,通过分析展示作者在19世纪 末北德现代工业和商业化背景下,对传统市民社会秩序、伦理道德规范、价值观念与个人自由 之间的矛盾所作的本质性探讨,揭示拉伯小说对德意志市民性,尤其是有教养市民阶层(das Bildungsbuergertum)的移动在怀疑与认同之间的悖论性认识;而作品的多元化叙事视角不仅显示 了小说叙事技巧的现代性,并且从艺术形式上强化和深入了小说的思考特征和悖论性认识。
