The maternal and infant mortality rates in China are significantly higher than those in Japan. At present, China’s two-rate ratio is about the same as that of Japan in the 1960s. From the 1950s to the 1980s, the infant mortality rate in our country dropped by 73% with an average rate of decline of 17%. In the same period, Japan’s infant mortality rate dropped by 90% with an average rate of decline of 28%. Such differences are related to the socio-economic and cultural education in the two countries, the health care system and service level, maternal and child health measures and other factors.
