Objective: To investigate the changes of serum C-type natriuretic peptide in patients with essential hypertension (EH) and its clinical significance. Methods: Serum C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) levels were measured by radioimmunoassay in 115 patients with EH and 54 patients with non-hypertension (control group), and the control group was statistically analyzed. Results: The levels of CNP in EH group were significantly higher than those in control group (P <0.01). The levels of CNP in EH Ⅱ and Ⅲ groups were significantly higher than those in EH Ⅰ and control groups (P <0.001) But significantly lower than the control group (P <0.05). Serum CNP levels in EH patients with heart, brain and kidney complications were significantly higher than those without complications (P <0.01). Conclusion: The levels of serum CNP in stage Ⅱ and stage Ⅲ EH patients are significantly increased, suggesting that CNP level is related to the target organ damage in hypertension.
