British scientists have succeeded in cultivating a purple tomato genetically modified tomato, purple pigment is a result of the transfer of a gene in snapdragon, this modification led to the production of anthocyanins in tomatoes. This anthocyanin-based pigment is an antioxidant and animal-based research shows it helps fight cancer. Scientists claim that this new type of tomato can improve the nutritional value of foods such as ketchup and pizza.
