I. Introduction
This topic was inspired by the findings of the ethnologist Lin Yaohua who investigated the Yi in Liangshan, and discovered that what distinguished the Yi from other ethnic groups was that the Yi had a custom of “warfare” while other ethnic groups did not have this particular custom. From the 1950s to present time, scholars have not yet done specific research on this topic. There are only a few discussions on the fighting from the perspective of the class system as part of the research on the social nature of Yi society in Liangshan. This arti ̄cle explores the Yi’s mentality towards fighting as well as related culture. It is done so that discus ̄sions on this issue could raise more attention and critiques from professional scholars.
