This article describes the adaptation of non-polluting liquid nitriding processes for diesel engine parts. The “Melonite” salt bath is a mixture of potassium salt of sodium cyanate and carbonate. Also, since the reaction of cyanate with ferrite requires continual aeration of air into the salt bath in order to supplement the consumption of oxygen. In addition to meeting the Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Protection Agency rules, this article addresses some of the other benefits of this process. This article was written by an author at an international symposium hosted by the Management Education Center at the Michigan State University in Detroit on October 31, 1980, hosted by Colland, Detroit, Michigan.
