The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has made the protection of children’s environmental hygiene the most important work of its own. Information on how and when children are at risk is crucial to achieving this goal. Recent examples of the relationship between scientific research and policy include the following actions taken by the US Environmental Protection Agency: implementation of the National Academy of Sciences recommendation on pesticides in children’s food, reduction and prevention of lead poisoning in children, and revision of ambient air quality standards for ozone and particulates. The National Food Quality Protection Act, which focuses on protecting children from the harmful effects of pesticide residues in food, still requires more information for decision-making. The amendments to the Food Quality Protection Act and the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1996 further promoted the development of a potential risk screening plan for the destruction of endocrine substances. President Clinton’s release of an executive order for the first time required federal agencies to reduce children’s environmental health and safety risks as another driving force. The success of the United States’ international commitment to child protection is inseparable from the strengthening and accessibility of environmental data. To adapt to these challenges, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is revamping major science policies to expand research opportunities and increase transparency. In this atmosphere, scientific research groups have more and more opportunities to play a greater role in promoting the current and future of children’s health.
