There are obvious differences between Japanese gratitude expressions and English. The number of gratitude languages is more than that of English ones, and their structures are complex. Many different forms of expression should be produced according to the needs of specific communicative situations. This paper attempts to combine the theory of identity construction with Japanese pragmatic research to explore the hierarchy and difference of Japanese gratitude language in the theoretical achievements of identity research to guide the communicative practice.
