Cyclopentadienes are important organic ligands that form stable metal-organic compounds that are pi-bonded with metals. The π-metal-ring bond stability is enhanced when the ring hydrogen is substituted with an alkyl or alkene group. Alkylcyclopentadienes such as allyl and buten-2-ylcyclopentadienes can be prepared by the reaction of cyclopentadienyl sodium with the corresponding haloalkene.
