Aphron drilling fluids are being used throughout the world for drilling in depleted reservoirs and other low-pressure formations. The main features of this type of drilling fluid are its unique low shear rheology and the presence of Aphrons. A recent study sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy conducted an in-depth study of the mechanism of action of the drilling fluid and determined the physico-chemical properties of Aphrons and other components in the drilling fluid and their impact on the wellbore when drilling penetrating and fracturing formations Liquid flow properties. The measured properties include wettability, surface tension, foam stability, radial dynamic flow visualization, and fluid displacement experiments. An important finding of this study is that Aphrons can withstand pressures of at least 4,000 lb / in2 (G), are highly stable at high pressures and effectively block the leak and prevent fluid intrusion; another important finding is that Aphrons and Aphrons and The affinity between the rock and mineral surfaces at the pores or crevices is small enough to allow Aphrons to be easily removed during production. The research provided the technical basis for the successful development of Aphron drilling fluid and also provided technical guidance for the on-site application and performance optimization of the drilling fluid.
