远在人类的幼年时代,工艺美术就随着人們的日常生活而诞生了。从新石器时代晚期的彩陶文化起,在这几千年中,工艺美术給予人們在物质和精神生活上的影响是多么巨大!但是,随着阶級社会的形成以及体力劳动与脑力劳动的对立出現以后,工艺美术就开始被一般文人墨客所輕视,认为它是“雕虫小技”,不能登“大雅王堂”。达样,就使得有些人对工艺美术的实质、特征缺乏正确的认识,許多最基本的理論問题悬而未决。因此,在理論上逐步地解决这些由历史上遺留下来的問題,使我們的认識趋于一致,这对于我們事业的发展是有着重大的現实意义。当然,这些问题不是一下子就可以谈得很清楚的。在这里,我仅仅从工艺美术的社会功能这一理论問題,作一些初步的探討。

Of course, these problems can not be made clear at once. Here, I only make some preliminary discussions on the theoretical issue of the social function of arts and crafts.
