Fifty years ago today, on April 21, 1949, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, in accordance with the orders of the Central Military Commission, initiated the cross-river campaign to destroy in one stroke the KMT’s painstaking efforts on the Yangtze River for more than three months. After more than 40 days of fighting, it has liberated more than 120 cities such as Nanjing, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Shanghai and Nanchang and vast lands such as southern Jiangsu, southern Anhui, Zhejiang, northern Fujian, southeast Hubei, northeast Jiangxi and northeast China.
