魏斐德生前曾任美国历史学会会长、加州大学伯克利分校东亚研究所所长,中国研究中心主任,他也是美国国际研究委员会会长、中国研究联合委员会会长、美国学术团体联合会主席、国家东亚资源中心主任,还曾在美国亚洲协会、社会科学研究联合会等机构任职。他是加州大学伯克利分校历史系教授兼亚洲研究哈斯(Haas)教授、上海研究中心的创始人。他著述等身,已经出版论著八部,分别为《大门口的陌生人——1839-1861华南社会的暴乱》、《控制与冲突》、《中华帝国的衰落》、《洪业》、《上海警察,1927-1937》、《上海歹土——战时恐怖活动与城市犯罪,1937-1941》、《间谍王——戴笠与中国特工》、《历史与意志——毛泽东思想的哲学透视》。这些有影响的著作中,有的获美国亚洲研究协会颁发的列文森奖,有的获加州大学出版社伯克利奖,以及美国城市历史协会颁发的非北美城市最佳历史书籍奖等。由于他对美国中国学研究和加州大学伯克利分校教育工作的杰出贡献,他还曾被授予“伯克利最高奖章”。作为华东师范大学历史学系的一名博士生研究生,我最感兴趣的研究课题,就是魏斐德这位史学大师的中国学研究成就及其传奇般的个人经历。为了进一步了解这位大师的学术及其生平,2008年夏前,我专程飞往美国,开展学术调查,其中,有幸采访了他生前大弟子——美国加州大学圣地亚哥分校历史系教授周锡瑞教授。周锡瑞先生与魏斐德教授年龄相仿,曾经是列文森的弟子,列文森不幸遇难后,他便转到魏斐德的门下,他们是师生,也是同事,更是朋友。在美国中国学界,相对来说,周锡瑞更加了解魏斐德。为此笔者专门采访了他,听取他关于魏斐德学术研究、史学思想及研究方法的见解。现将访谈记录整理如下:
Former director of the American Historical Society, director of the East Asian Institute of the University of California at Berkeley, director of the China Research Center, he is also the president of the United States International Research Council, the chairman of the China Research Joint Committee, the chairman of the Federation of American Academic Societies, the nation of East Asia Director of Resource Center, also served in the Asian American Institute of Asia, Social Science Research Association and other agencies. He is a Professor of History at the University of California, Berkeley and a Professor of Asian Studies Haas, founder of the Shanghai Research Center. His writings and other works have published eight works, namely “the stranger at the gate - 1839-1861 riots in South China society”, “control and conflict”, “decline of the Chinese Empire”, “Hong Ye”, “Shanghai police , 1927-1937 ”,“ Shanghai evil soil - wartime terror and urban crime, 1937-1941 ”,“ Spy Wang - Dai Li and Chinese agents ”,“ History and Will - A Philosophical Perspective on Mao Zedong Thought. ” Some of these influential works have been awarded the Leavisin Prize by the Asian American Research Association, some by the Berkeley Prize of the University of California Press, and the Best Historical Books of Non-North American Cities by the American Association of Urban History. He was also awarded the Berkeley Medal of Honor for his outstanding contributions to the study of Chinese studies in the United States and UC Berkeley. As a doctoral student graduate student in the Department of History of East China Normal University, the subject of my research that is of most interest is the achievement of Chinese studies by Wei Fei-de and his legendary personal experiences. In order to know more about the master’s academic career and his life, I made a special trip to the United States in summer 2008 to conduct an academic investigation. Among them, I was fortunate to interview his great disciple, Professor Zhou Xirui, a professor of history at the University of California, San Diego. Mr. Zhou Xirui and Professor Wei Fade similar age, was a disciple of Levinson, Levinson Unfortunately, he died, he went to the door of Wei Fade, they are teachers and students, but also colleagues, but also friends. In the Chinese academic circles in the United States, relatively speaking, Zhou Xi Rui more understanding of Wei Fade. To this end, I interviewed him specifically and listened to his opinions on Wei Fade academic research, historical thought and research methods. The interview records are now organized as follows:
