A new method of multispectral image data compression based on Karhunen-Loeve Transformation (KLT) is propesed in this paper. KLT was applied in the compression system of multispectral image data. A maximum degree decreasing bit flow method is studied. Experimental results show that this method can obtain the compression ratio of 3. 2~ 5. 1 in sixteen bands only by removing the spectral corelation without any coding. It is better than JPEG in removing the spectral correlation. The total compression ratio of KLT+JPEG reaches 102. 4 with the PSNR of 34. 33.
