放射性碳素测定年代方法的建立,使史前考古学的研究进入了一个新的时期,有的人称它“放射性碳素革命”。我们暂且不去探讨这种说法是否完全确切,但放射性碳素测定年代的方法,确实把史前考古学的研究大大地向前推进了一步,为史前考古学的研究提供了科学的编年依据。尽管在碳——14测定过程中,由于种种原因,有的测定结果不可避免地有所误差,但放射性碳素测定年代方法必竟为我们提供了相对正确的“绝对年代”。我们把放射性碳素测定年代与考古学上的地层学和类型学结合起来,
