王士祯继钱谦益之后,执诗坛之牛耳,被称为一代正宗。其于顺康时期文化融合转型之际,迅速完成了诗风转变,找到了最适宜的表达方式。王士祯将这种独特的表达方式归纳为神韵说。在凭借诗名得到康熙帝赏识后,王士祯逐渐淡化诗中让遗民文人产生联想的伤感,自觉向正统靠拢,有意识地为盛世鼓吹雅音。王士祯诗坛领袖地位之确立与其官位密切相关,因而受到赵执信的质疑。赵执信以儒家诗教为准则对王士祯神韵说的批评,可以说切中其要害。
