兰州军区地处西北五省(区),有80％的医院驻在“老、少、边、穷”地区。他们充分发挥医院技术性强、技术人员集中的优势开展技术助民扶贫工作,把为“老、少、边、穷”地区各族群众送医送药、防病治病、解决疾苦,当做自己义不容辞的责任。据不完全统计,三年来共派各种医疗队246支,深入2213个乡镇,11255个村庄、放牧点,行程700多万公里。为地方群众看病24.5万多人次;收治病员18.3万多人;抢救危重病人3.2万多人;做各种手术2.3万例;培训技术骨干2425人;开展新技术、新业务2827项;赠送医疗器械4527(台)件。
