Objective: To investigate the incidence of strabismus in patients with mental retardation (MR) and its relationship with MR degree and MR etiology. Methods: 563 cases of MR patients were strabismus specialist examination, and collection and testing of MR etiology, MR classification, strabismus in patients with MR etiology, MR, and incidence of strabismus were statistically analyzed. Results: Of 563 MR patients, 183 cases (32.50%) had strabismus, including 112 cases (61.20%) of exotropia, 43 cases (23.50%) of esotropia and 28 cases (15.30%) of vertical strabismus. There was no significant difference in the incidence of strabismus between MR patients with different etiologies (P> 0.05). Kendall correlation analysis between IQ and strabismus showed that P> 0.05. Conclusions: The incidence of strabismus in MR patients is obviously higher than that in normal people. Strabismus is the main cause of strabismus. However, the incidence of strabismus is not related to the etiology and degree of MR.
